About the presentation:

In this course, we explore the nuanced terrain of ethical decision-making within behavior analysis, particularly in relation to evidence-based practice and client empowerment. Together, we’ll explore the process of teaching individuals, especially those with autism or developmental disabilities, the vital skill of making informed choices. We will determine how we can support client self-advocacy and dive into the right to habilitation, including the landmark court case that guarantees this right to our clients. Informed consent, assent, and the role of choice in these processes are discussed. Finally, we will cover the clinician skills and contexts that make teaching choice-making behavior possible, as well as some additional corequisites such as learning to assess social validity and risk-benefit analysis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe evidence-based practice (EBP) and the critical components required to engage in EBP
  • Participants will be able to identify the role of client choice in EBP
  • Participants will be able to define self-determination and determine how and in which contexts we can teach choice and self-determination skills
  • Participants will be able to describe habilitation and the how the the right to habilitation was established in the court system
  • Participants will be able to identify critical issues in consent and assent for ABA services
